A magical Christmas Day at Liverpool Women’s Hospital saw the birth of more than a dozen babies.
Midwives at the hospital were kept busy from the moment the clock ticked into December 25 – with the first baby arriving just before 1am.
Parents were celebrating on Merseyside’s other maternity wards too – though they were far quieter this morning with Arrowe Park reporting just one birth before midday.
By 10am Liverpool Women’s had already seen nine babies delivered – and at that stage a further 20 mums-to-be were in labour.
By lunchtime the number of births had risen to 14 as midwives at the centre enjoyed a bumper day of new-borns.
Among the smiling parents were 32-year-old Ian Sullivan and partner Rachel Poole, 31, from Anfield.
The couple welcomed little Rylie into the world at 10.32am, weighing 5lbs 10.5oz – exactly the same birth weight as her older sister, two-year-old Rosie. Rylie also had big brother Richie, aged 12, waiting for her to come home.
Betsy Healing was born several hours earlier, at 8.52am, leaving mum and dad Sarah and Chris delighted with the new arrival.
Weighing 9lbs, 0.5oz Betsy has three-year-old big brother Ralph waiting at home in Warrington for her.
Another beautiful new-born with a big brother waiting to say hello was Joseph Deery who was born at 11.32am and weighed 8lb 4oz.
Mum Laura, 30 and dad Paul, 34, were looking forward to showing elder brother James, one, what Santa had brought.
The huge number of births came as a surprise to midwife Ann Spofforth – though she said the number of babies they were expecting to deal with was similar to a normal day.
She said: “It’s a lovely atmosphere and babies born on Christmas Day are special – there’s something magical about being born on Christmas Day.”
Over at Arrowe Park just one baby was born by midday, though the child was expected to be followed by one or two others later in the day.
And at Whiston Hospital the first born girl was baby Eliza Newton, whose mum Emma McKeown welcomed her into the world at 2.55am.
Eliza was joined by a boy at 7.15am – though dad Eddie Lika has not yet decided on a name.
