The inability to bear or conceive a child (infertility) is a challenge facing many couples across the world. It appears to be on the rise as there are increasing number of fertility clinics dedicated to helping couples conceive.
The causes of rise in infertility today may be as a result of several factors including; environmental, health, lifestyle and age as well.
Infertility affects both sexes; male and female.
Here are five options couples who are infertile may explore to achieve their dream of conceiving;
This is the first choice to go for treatment of infertility. They are either injected or taken in the form of a pill. These drugs boost the production of eggs by releasing hormones thereby making the embryo more receptive to implantation. If this alone does not give the desired result, it is combined with IVF or artificial insemination.
This is the easiest of all procedures available. A specially prepared sperm is injected directly into the uterus with the help of a catheter. The success rate is higher for artificial insemination than other methods after six cycles of treatment. The procedure is so simple that it can be done in a doctor’s office. It is suitable for people with low quality sperm or for women who produce antibodies to the sperm.
In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Only a small percentage of couples go for IVF because it is pretty complex and expensive. It is a method where the embryo is formed outside the womb in a lab by combining eggs and sperm. The formed embryo or embryos is then placed in the uterus of the mother. Babies born this way are called “test-tube babies”. IVF is suggested for couples diagnosed with endometriosis, low sperm count, ovulation, fallopian tube, and uterus problems. This is the last option to be taken when other methods don’t work.
A third party is involved in this method of treatment. The baby is carried by a surrogate mother. This is done when a woman is incapable of carrying the baby due to diseases and other risk factors. Either artificial insemination or IVF is used here to make the surrogate mother pregnant.
Anatomical abnormalities can also be the reason for infertility. This can be corrected with a surgery after which one can proceed with the pregnancy. This is best for couples suffering from endometriosis, block in the fallopian tube, or a problem with the testicles. The success rate cannot be determined here as it depends on the severity of the problem the couples face.
