Why is My Baby Not Sleeping at Night?

Sleep is as important to babies as it to adults. Newborns within the first 3 months sleep for a total of 16 to 18 hours a day but they wake up every two to three hours to feed even in the night. It is expected that by 4 to 6 months they should, your baby should sleep six to eight hours on a stretch.

Babies are unpredictable in their sleep patterns. Some sleep all day and party all night, some are heavy sleepers while some are light sleepers. Babies fight sleep as much as they can and some especially the ones determined not to sleep succeed for a long time until they fall asleep or you make them sleep. Whatever is the case, there are ways to help them sleep.

Reasons your baby Might not be sleeping in the night.
  1. Tiredness
  2. Heat or cold
  3. Hunger
  4. Thirst
  5. Colic
  6. Sleep positions
  7. Soiled diaper or nappy
Ways to help your child sleep through the night

I believe every mother has a natural instinct to understand their baby even if it takes some time, you will understand your baby’s cry and discomfort. Study your baby to know why he or she isn’t sleeping through the night. I found out that my baby sleeps well at night if he has a bath before bedtime. The day he doesn\’t, he cries all through and no one will sleep. It turned out that heat was his problem.

Find out what is causing your baby not to sleep at night and then we can find the solution

Tiredness

Tiredness during the day could disturb his or her night sleep. Watch out for when your baby is tired. He starts rubbing the eyes, yawning or being fuzzy. Your baby can get tired from all the carrying and playing and just wants to lie down to sleep. If he doesn\’t get enough rest during the day it could affect his sleep at night.

Heat or cold

Out of fear of cold, many parents don\’t properly ventilate the room their baby stays in. they wear multiple clothes and in the bid to create warmth for a baby they believe will easily fall sick from cold, they create.

Hunger

If your baby isn’t getting enough breastmilk then he or she won’t sleep well at night. Do what you can to make your baby feed properly because it is needed not only for good sleep but for brain development. If you are not producing enough breastmilk you can take lactation cookies or other therapies that increase milk supply or augment breastmilk with formula.

Colic

Colic is a term used to describe well-fed babies who cry for 3 hours or more within 24 hours every day. Colic cans start around 2 weeks and last for 4 to 6 months. If you notice this pattern in your baby then take him or her to see the doctor and together you can figure out ways to soothe the baby.

Soiled diaper or nappy

Your baby could be very sensitive to soiled diapers. Always wear a clean diaper at bedtime and check when he wakes up to feed if the diaper is soiled with poo or heavy with urine.

Sleep positions

Some babies like to sleep on the back while others don\’t mind being laid on their tummy. Find out what works for your child

Also, put out the light and don’t make a habit of playing with your baby when he or she wakes up in the night. Let your child learn to fall back to sleep on his own.

6 Sleeping Tips for New Parents

For most people parenthood comes with many things in one package. Part of it is the exhaustion that comes from sleep deprivation. Some babies can sleep the whole day and spend the night awake and or crying. While some might not stay awake or cry through the night, they wake up every 2 to 3 hours to feed. This period can be stressful for both mother and father. People often forget that the father undergoes sleep deprivation like the mother. Here are tips to help both father and mother cope with sleep deprivation.

Take turns in the night:

If you are bottle-feeding your baby, you both should take turns to feed the baby and if you are breastfeeding, the mother can express milk into the bottle for the father to feed the baby while she gets some rest and she breastfeeds when it\’s her turn so that the father can get some rest. The father can also help soothe and pacify the baby to enable the mother to grab more rest.

Sleep when the baby is sleeping:

This is one of the underrated advice. You ask, \”who will do my house chores, wash the baby’s clothes?\” My work is easier to do while the baby is asleep and the father is at work. Mother dearest, close your eyes to those chores because there is no end to house chores. Your baby sleeps several times in the early days of birth. Take some of those sleep times and get some sleep. Your partner and yourself can do the little some of the chores when he or she is around.

Don’t be ashamed to ask for help:

Ask for help from family members or friends who come visiting. Ask them to help hold your baby while you take a nap, to help you with some house chores or grocery shopping so you and baby can sleep at the same time.

Understand your baby:

Your baby might not be sleeping through the night due to certain discomfort which if you discover would allow you and your baby sleep through the night. I discovered my daughter didn\’t sleep comfortably in diapers when she was between 4 weeks to 6 months. When I remove the diapers, she slept longer and she preferred sleeping with standing fan to ceiling fan or air condition. We became parents that slept almost all through the night. Some babies don\’t like to be wrapped or covered from head to toe, many are sensitive to heat and these could make them fuzzy all night.

Avoid sharing a bed:

This might look like a good solution at the moment when the need to frequently breastfeed your baby arises but it will become a long term problem. Your baby will learn to fall asleep on his or her when they sleep alone. As they grow accustomed to sleeping with you, it becomes difficult to learn to fall asleep by themselves.

Music could help:

Most times babies love music. Playing soft music or lullaby could help your baby sleep longer and enable you to get good sleep.

The exhaustion or fatigue that comes from sleep deprivation as new parents is not something to be joked with. It limits your function and could take a toll on your health especially for first-time parents who are inexperienced. Good news is that this phase will soon pass.

TO BE A MOTHER OR A MODEL – Episode 2

\”Díẹ̀ díẹ̀ nimú ẹledẹ̀ẹ́fi ń wọgbà\” (Little by little is how the pig\’s nose enters the yard), Temi thought out loud to herself.

\”Sexy Mama\” was crooning from the TV in front of her, as images of a beautiful light-skinned African woman flashed intermittently in the music video. The artiste sang the praises of the \”Sexy Mama\” who had a newborn strapped to her back.

\”Mtchew!\”, hissed Temi as she watched a closeup shot of the lady\’s torso- so stretch marks free. She had a piece of cloth covering her chest and a short wrapper exposing flawless thighs. \”This used to be me,\” lamented Temi.

As though on cue, her baby kicked. Nothing painful, but Temi frowned as she rubbed her abdomen as though to soothe her baby. The music video was played as part of the closing montage for a TV show, Feminine World, which had begun to get Temi\’s attention recently. That day\’s episode had discussed major health issues some women faced during and after childbirth and how those health issues affected the lives of mothers long term.

Temi heard some new words- postpartum depression, hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and vesicovaginal fistula. \”Why on Earth should the process of bringing a new human being into this world be at such a high risk for the gender who have been assigned such an arduous task?\”

Well, I will not be a victim to striae gravidarum, postpartum depression,
hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, vesicovaginal fistula, and whatever else victimizes mothers.
\”Díẹ̀ díẹ̀ nimú ẹledẹ̀ẹ́fi ń wọgbà! So, I must start planning for my health as I plan for my baby\’s.\”

Living with Your Grandparents: Benefits for Kids

Show me a child that doesn\’t like being pampered with love and attention. There is none and who does the pampering better than grandparents? Every parent looks forward to seeing their grandchildren maybe that is why most grandparents can deal with the whining of babies and toddlers.

While some children live with their grandparents due to circumstances beyond their control, others live with them because the grandparents moved in with their parents. Living with grandparents has its benefits.

Reasons, why children live with grandparents, are many. Some are unavoidable

  • The death of either of both parents of a child
  • The child was given birth to by young parents who were not ready to raise the child
  • The parents could be sick
  • The grandparents want their grandchild to stay with them
  • The grandparent is sick and needs to move in with the children
  • The grandparent moved in to help the family
  • A grandparent is relocating from one either a state or country.
Benefits of living with Grandparents:
  • You have additional adult supervision for your children
  • With someone to look at the kids with an elders\’ eye, you have more time to do other things.
  • The children enjoy more attention and care which you as a parent might be tired to give after being exhausted from the day\’s responsibility.
  • Grandparents can help the children learn new skills, help them with reading and their homework.
  • Who better to teach the children history and take them back in time than grandparents.
  • Sometimes children feel more relaxed sharing their thoughts and worries with the grandparents than their parents. You would prefer that than them talking to their inexperienced friends.

How Parents can help their Kids living with their grandparents

  1. Teach your children to respect their grandparents. Children tend to test their grandparents\’ patience when allowed
  2. Let your children know that it is responsible to make it a part of their daily routine to help with the chores at home.
  3. Let them check with them their grandparents as they would check with their parents before making decisions like bringing your friends over, leaving the house.
  4. The children should be taught that their grandparents should be involved in whatever is happening in their school activities. They are the ones looking after them and looking out for them.
  5. Don\’t become a handful sucking up all their time and keeping them worried. They don\’t have the strength of youth. They spent that raising your parents. Is a statement they need to hear regularly.
What to do if your grandparents live with you
  • Make them feel welcome and at home. Don\’t make them feel like they encroached on your space
  • Keep the house tidy and free from litters.
  • Children don\’t go around snooping around granny\’s and grandpa\’s things. Ask their permission before touching their things.
  • Your grandparents like the company which parents are not available to give. Children spend time chatting and having fun with them.
  • Never be rude to them. Never insult them
  • Parents should help grandparents and grandchildren have bonding time and activities. A time to share family stories.

Whether you are living with your grandparents or they are living with you, make use of the opportunity to enjoy every moment with them. You won\’t have them around forever.

Baby Teething Symptoms: How to Take Care of your Baby\’s First Teeth

Teething is one of the major milestones every baby crosses. When you see the first set of teeth pop, it makes you smile. Every parent is excited about that first set of teeth that show especially considering the troubles many babies go through to bring out that first set of teeth. Babies bring out their first teeth between 4 to 10 months. The teeth come out in twos with either the lower or upper front teeth also called the incisors being the first.

Baby Teething Signs

Different babies show different signs of teething. You have to carefully study your child to understand. Some of these signs can go on for as long as two months before the first teeth pop up. Below are signs that he is preparing to sprout his first teeth

  • Your baby begins to drip saliva a lot
  • Baby is biting on his finger almost every time.
  • Your nipple becomes his biting buddy. He bites and draws the nipple frequently
  • Some babies are restless and cry often only comforted with breastfeeding or a cold tether placed on the gum.
  • The gum can become sore or tender when the teeth are about to spring out.

While some people believe teething is associated with diarrhea and fever, it hasn’t been proven to be true yet. What occurs is that the immunity is lowered during the time the teeth is about to sprout. This makes the baby prone to stomach infections and they can easily fall ill from the things they put in the mouth or what they are exposed to.

Ways to get through your baby teething stage

Many mothers, especially first-time moms worry that their baby is sucking and try to prevent the baby from sucking their hands. If your baby isn’t sucking his thumb then he isn’t sucking his fingers. He is only doing his best to soothe his itching gum.

  1. Acetaminophen or paracetamol would help deal with the discomfort or pain that comes from teething
  2. Place a cold tether or ice on the sore or itchy gum to soothe the gum
  3. Get many teething toys for your baby and keep them clean always.
  4. Allow your baby gnaw on your fingers. Make sure to keep your hands always clean.
  5. Occasionally massage his gum with your fingers or washcloths kept in the freezer.

Taking care of your baby’s teeth

You and your baby have gone through the troubles of bringing out the first teeth. This is great. You now have to ensure your baby’s teeth and oral health is great. Keep in mind that if you don’t take care of your baby’s teeth, he or she could develop tooth decay otherwise known as dental caries. How do you maintain good oral hygiene for your baby?

  1. Book a visit to the dentist for your baby as soon as you see your baby’s first teeth
  2. Clean the gum with a soft clean cloth and warm water.
  3. As the teeth grow, switch to toothbrush with soft bristles and a pea size fluoride toothpaste.
  4. Constantly check for signs of tooth decay. A white or brown patch on the teeth. If there are any concerns, make sure to talk to the dentist

TO BE A MOTHER OR A MODEL? – Episode 1

TO BE A MOTHER OR A MODEL? – Episode 1

It was a beautiful baby shower. An expectant mother, Temi, and her husband, Shola, held hands as they strolled into their compound from the gate. They had just seen off the last of the guests- Temi\’s best friend, Folake, and her boyfriend, Jude. Shola was in high spirits and was gushing about how everyone was so expectant of their first baby\’s delivery due in two weeks (if Dr. Gideon\’s EDD was correct). Everyone but Temi as she couldn\’t shake off the thought that had begun to nag her for the past 3 months.

Being a mother couldn\’t mean she had to quit her career working as a model for VIP Modelling Agency or could it? Mr. Hobs, the Ghanaian who ran the agency, had assured her that he would reserve her place if she stayed trim after weaning her baby. Staying trim wasn\’t her problem. She hadn\’t gained more than 15 kg all through the pregnancy.

What bothered her were the lines- a lot of them- which had begun to show on her protruded belly from her diaphragm to her pubis. To make matters worse, nobody felt it was a big deal! Mama had laughed it off as \”Proud Mother Stripes.\” Dr. Gideon called them striae gravidarum- scars formed when the skin tears internally due to overstretching. And Shola? He just shrugged and said, \” No big deal; my Mum has stretch marks all over, thighs, breasts, arms, you\’ve not noticed?\” No offence but Mama can afford to look like a zebra for all I care; I can\’t!

The greetings from the Adebola\’s, the neighbors upstairs, brought Temi out if her reverie. \”Hi!🙋\”she waved up and smiled at Shola as he held open the door for her. \”I am not giving up on my career because I want to have a baby. There must be a medical solution for stretch marks. Striae gravidarum can\’t ruin my dreams\”, she resolved to herself as she stepped into her apartment.

As a new mother, what can Temi do? Don\’t miss the next episode as Temi makes a bold motherhood decision.

Things You Should Understand if You Have a Baby and a Pet

You most likely had your pet before your baby, and your pet is a major part of your family circle and daily routine. Now that your baby is either on the way or has arrived, everyone including the pet, has to make major adjustments for the baby. The most common pets are dogs and cat and the way you help them adjust to your baby goes a long way in the way everyone fares.

Your pet is well aware that a little one is on the way, and if it’s your first child, then you should prepare your pet for the ultimate switch of attention. One interesting thing about pets is their loyalty and sense of smell. They will listen to instructions you train them with and you can use their sense of smell to the advantage of the baby and pet.

Things to Do

  • Before the baby is born, constantly tell your pet that new addition to the family is on the way.
  • Before bringing the baby from the hospital, you can get your pet to sniff the clothes the baby has one so that your pets get familiar with the scent of the baby on arrival.
  • When you are ready to introduce your baby to your cat or dog, make sure it is done under strict supervision. Don’t allow the dog to lick the ears or body of your baby. Since Cats can be so unpredictable, do not allow your cat to get too close on the first introduction.
  • It will only be wise to keep your dog on a leash for the first few weeks anytime he is around the baby.
  • When your baby starts to crawl, keep the cat litter far from him or her. Your cat could have parasite toxoplasma, which is not safe for babies.

Things you shouldn’t do.

  • Do not leave your baby in a walker, crib or swing alone with your pet
  • Don’t leave your baby on the floor with your dog and cat, especially when they have shown aggressive behaviour.
  • You shouldn’t raise your voice on the pet. Show your pets the same affection and attention before the arrival of the baby.
  • Do not shy away from being affirmative when communicating with your part. Always stand by your no when you want them to behave properly.

Benefits of having a pet at home

Some research has shown that having a pet at home has some benefits for your baby.

  1. Children that grow with pets around them grow up to be healthy and happy. Pets around them prevent them from developing allergies as adults. They build immunity to allergens they would have been exposed to as babies.
  2. Parents and child bonding time is developed during dog walking time. You can also walk the dog with the baby in the stroller helping you exercise.
  3. Several respiratory illnesses are absent in children who grew up with pets around them
  4. Your baby will grow to learn how to treat animals better as you teach him or her to do better with animals.

Whatever you do, do not neglect your child and your pet. Always be proactive, full of care, and be attentive to the concerns of all parties involved.

How to Discover and Nurture your Baby\’s Interest

Children love to play and explore, and if as a parent, you are not paying attention to how they play and what they play with, you will miss important information about them. Children develop their personality from when they are babies and many are born with innate abilities which if you as their parent discover early, you can help them build on it and channel it properly.

How do you discover your baby’s interest?

Pay close attention

What is it that your baby loves to do? Is it drumming, singing? Oh yes, babies as young as eight months sing. Don\’t be surprised. Is it scribbling, love for musical instruments? What type of toys calls her attention? Pay closer attention to your child\’s pattern to pick what interests your child and what is likely his or her talent.

Encourage their interest

My son was one, I bought him his first drum set and oh, how he drummed our ears down with it. I noticed how he operated smartphones well before he was a year old. He has a knack for technology too. Whatever ability or talent you see your baby demonstrating, encourage early by exposing them to it under your watchful care.

Praise their efforts

When your baby does something interesting or worthy of note, praise them. Clap for them, raise them a high five, or buy a gift. If the baby tries to stack a lego, make it look like he/she has accomplished a big feat. Never make their accomplishment look small.

Give them exposure

Expose your baby to various fun activities and classes to help you discover one or more of his or her interest. This kind of exposure can also help children also discover more about themselves. You just might learn that your child loves drawing and painting.

How to Nurture Your Child’s interest

You have found one or more interest in your child. That is great. Keep in mind that you can discover more of his or her interest and also that his/her interest can change as the child grows.

  1. Enroll your child in recreational activities that encourage this talent or gift you have discovered.
  2. An academic program, children boot camps, science workshops for children, a mathematics program, are great ways to help children who are mathematical or logical thinkers.
  3. Don’t make your child do that thing you love and was never able to do for yourself. Don’t make them into that version of you that you want to exist.
  4. Encourage your children to be themselves. Never try to stifle them. You can become too conscious of order and cleanliness in the house that you forget that in playing, children learn and build themselves. Allow them to explore.
  5. Get materials that talk to their interest. If you discover your child likes painting, always keep art materials for painting around, if he or she is interested in music than get musical instruments for kids. Let the child see how interested you are in what he or she is interested in.
  6. Make your house a work of art. Beautiful and interesting for your child. A beautiful environment helps children\’s creativity.
  7. Start grooming your baby\’s talent early. Also, look for a school that has an all-round educational system. This is to help complement the great work you are doing at home.
